A self service laundry combining traditional and modern with an emphasis on nature

The Lavandaria Morinha Self Service project came to be as a need to address a challenging costumer request for a laundromat space and, at the same time, to offer a personalized service for clothes alterations. The Lavandaria by stu.dere is intended to be a harmonious space which provides a comfortable lounge area for people while waiting for the washing and drying equipment to finish.

For the development of the project concept the duality between traditional and modern was taken into account, with an emphasis on nature. The purpose was to create a modern and innovative space, reflecting the evolution of a society that seeks practical solutions for the management of it’s day to day, while still bringing the memory of traditional community washers back.

The space that resulted from the merger of two stores was divided into a self service area and a specialized service area. The green colored ceramics were chosen as an allusion to the ceramic used in the old laundry places. The floor is made of micro cement, suitable for high traffic areas, while also being totally waterproof, without joints or sealers, facilitating its maintenance.

Suspended plants bring the nature in through lightness and freshness, while a marble clothing worktable hints to the old stone tanks for beating garments.
